246: A Restful Day in the Life of Jesus, Part 3

A Restful Day in the Life of Jesus, Part 3…

After Jesus delivered the Gaderene demoniac in Mark 5, He and His disciples got back in the boat and traveled again to the other side where they had started out their day. A multitude gathered around Him again. This is when Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, approached Him and begged Him to come and heal his twelve-year-old daughter. As Jesus was heading towards Jairus’ house, He was touched by a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years.

This woman was suffering from a blood disease and had spent all that she had on doctors. She was destitute and desperate, but she had heard about Jesus and believed in her heart that He could heal her.

“‘If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.’ Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.” (Mark 5:28-29)1

Affliction is the Greek word “mastix” which means “a whip, scourge.”2 She had been whipped and scourged for twelve years by her disease, yet just by reaching out to Jesus, she was instantly relieved of this abuse from the enemy.

“And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd…”” (Mark 5:30)

Jesus stopped and turned around. Here He was on His way to heal a child who was at the point of death, but He stopped. Can you imagine having the presence of mind in an emergency situation to be aware of anything but the crisis at hand? Jairus’ daughter died, by the way, before Jesus got there! But Jesus is never late even when the situation looks hopeless!

Jesus made time to pause for this woman. He said to her,

“‘Who touched My clothes?; …the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. And He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.’” (Mark 5:30, 33-34)

Why would Jesus say, “Your faith HAS MADE YOU WELL” and then say she would “BE HEALED” of her affliction? If she was well, why did she still need to be healed? Actually, the words “made well” and “healed” are two different Greek words.

The word “well” in the sentence “Your faith has made you WELL” is the Greek word “sozo.” Sozo simply means healed.3 But when He said “Be HEALED of your affliction” in verse 34 , it is the Greek word “hygies.” What’s the difference? “Sozo”” meant that she was healed of the disease. The source of the disease was removed from her body so the bleeding stopped. But this did not mean that the effects of twelve years of the disease were restored. “Hygies” means to make whole, to restore.4 Here is an example of “hygies”:

“…when they saw the mute speaking, the MAIMED MADE WHOLE, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel. “(Matthew 15:31)

Maimed means to lose a body part, literally to be crooked or mutilated.5 In other words, where the maimed were crooked from the affects of diseases such as arthritis, they were made straight. Where the maimed were mutilated from events such as accidents, their flesh and bones were restored! What was Jesus saying to this woman? “Go into peace and you will be restored.” The word “in” in the passage is actually the word “into,” “eis” in the Greek.6 Jesus was saying, “I’ve just opened a door for you to go INTO a place called ‘peace.’ Go and live there, and just watch what will happen to you. You will be restored!”7

We should never underestimate the value of the peace that Jesus has given to us.
