When we were born again, we entered into Christ’s death and resurrection. As believers we have been co-crucified with Him and co-raised with Him.
Co-crucified:
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)1
Where Paul says, “I live by faith IN the Son of God,” the better translation is “I live by faith OF the Son of God.”2 He not only provided our death and resurrection, He provides the faith to live His life now!
Co-raised:
God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus… (Ephesians 2:4-6)
Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have been given His authority. Now we can say, “Jesus, as You are — seated high above all rule, power, dominion, and authority — so am I in this world.”3 God has crowned us with glory so that we speak life everywhere we go and see the forces of death and darkness give way to the force of good coming forth from within us.
Notice that these verses in Romans 6 are in past tense. We were co-crucified, co-buried, co-raised, and co-seated with Him in heaven. We are not aiming to get there one day. We are there now!
…knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. (Romans 6:6)
Think about what that verse just said. “Knowing this…” What do we need to KNOW so that we will no longer be slaves to sin? We need to know it because if we don’t, then the reverse will be true — sin will swing us around by the tail. And don’t think of being slaves to sin as just being in bondage to lust or addictions. Anything that isn’t of faith is sin!4 If we are anxious, it’s sin! If we are envious, it’s sin! If we are hoping to be right with God by doing good things, it’s sin! Here’s what we need to know to be free: OUR OLD MAN WAS CRUCIFIED WITTH CHRIST. The old man died and ceased to exist, and he has no resurrection power! We have to know that we don’t have the “old man” with a sin nature and the “new man” with Christ’s nature battling for our heart, or we’re going to live a lie. Believing truth is the key to walking in freedom!
