56: Jesus Came Out To Take Us In

So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the Tree of Life. (Genesis 3:24)¹

The flaming sword of the cherubim at the entrance to the Garden of Eden was the sword of judgment. Jesus Christ, our Tree of Life came out through that sword of judgment to bring us back in with Him. The sword did not penetrate Him as He came out because of His sinless perfection. He came into our world as a human being, fully God and fully man, with only one purpose: to die for us. He lived a sinless life as a human being so that He could qualify as our Lamb of God. Our sin was transferred to Him, and then He went through the sword of judgment for us. That sword was the cross on which He was crucified. He endured until the end because of His undying love.

Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel…For if we died with Him. We shall also live with Him. (2 Timothy 2:8,11)

In a great mystery, which our brains cannot grasp, Jesus Christ took us with Him through the flaming sword into the presence of God, dying our death as our Substitute and protecting us from judgment. In our own righteousness we would never have passed the test. The sword of judgment would have condemned us all forever. However, as Jesus carried us through the judgment, we died with Him, and as we passed through to the other side, He formed a new sinless creation and raised us up together with Himself. Now we are free to eat from the Tree of Life and live.
