And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. Also for Adam and his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, and clothed them. (Genesis 3:20-21)1
When Adam and Eve sinned, they covered themselves with fig leaves. Man’s answer to sin was insufficient. Why? Because no blood was shed.
Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins. (Hebrews 9:22)
So God clothed them with coats of animal skins. In other words, blood was shed to give them a covering for their sin. Prior to this first sacrifice of animals, no blood had been shed. God was the first one to kill animals, and this was the first time innocent blood was shed for the guilty.
Can you see God’s foreshadowing of His plan of redemption through Jesus Christ from the beginning? The blood of Jesus is the scarlet thread throughout the scriptures.
