A Restful Day in the Life of Jesus, Part 4…
After Jesus preached to multitudes, calmed the storm at sea, delivered the Gaderene demoniac, He then traveled across the sea to meet multitudes again. The ruler of the synagogue, Jairus, met Him and begged Him to come to his house and heal his 12-year-old daughter who was dying. Jesus began to walk towards the man’s house, but stopped because a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years touched His robe so she could be healed. He paused on His journey to the synagogue ruler’s home to talk to this woman.
Wouldn’t you call someone being on their death bed an emergency? Can you imagine stopping to talk to someone while you’re headed to pray for a dying person? If the woman had been bleeding for 12 years, what’s a few more minutes going to matter? Why didn’t Jesus rush to Jairus’ home? What if the little girl died?
After Jesus had healed the woman with the issue of blood, and while He was still speaking to her, some people came from Jairus’ house to tell him that his daughter had, in fact, died.
“‘Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?’ As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, ‘Do not be afraid; only believe.’” (Mark 5:35-36)1
Jesus said, “Only believe.” In other words, “Put your confidence in Me, rely on Me, be persuaded that I can do this. Trust Me.” Jesus went in with the parents and Peter, James, and John, passing friends and family who were wailing loudly. He touched the twelve-year-old girl and said, “Little girl, arise.” And immediately she got up and walked.
Even when Jesus is late, it’s not too late.
All of this in the course of a day!
His yoke is easy and His burden is light. The life of peace is the most exciting life. It’s the life of the supernatural, and He’s opened the door and invited us to live that life in Him.
