On the last night before He would be taken from them, the disciples were with Jesus. For three and a half years they had watched Jesus teach, heal, deliver, and provide for multitudes, and now Jesus was telling them that He would be leaving them. They didn’t understand what was getting ready to happen, but Jesus did, and in John chapters 13-17 we have an absolute goldmine of encouraging words and promises that Jesus spoke to His disciples and to all who would believe in the ages to come. Whenever you feel hopeless or doubtful or persecuted, read through those chapters of John. I promise you will be strengthened in your faith.
In these final words to His disciples, Jesus promised that they would be severely persecuted for believing and spreading the Gospel, but He also promised to leave them with the most valuable and practical thing He could give them: PEACE. If believers could receive His peace, then they could walk in all of the other promises, such as the following:
Greater works will we do than even Jesus did. (John 14:12)
We can ask anything in His name and He will do it. (John 14:14)
We will bear much fruit. (John 15:8)
His joy will remain in us and be made full. (John 15:11)
We will love each other. (John 15:17)
We will be convinced of our righteousness. (John 16:10)
We will hear His voice. (John 16:13)
We will behold His glory. (John 17:24)
We will know His love. (John 17:26)
All the promises of God have been fulfilled through Jesus are Yes, and Amen to the glory of God through us! (2 Corinthians 1:20)
