Did you know that your spirit is always at peace if you are a believer? It is never disturbed by outward circumstances. Just like God is not wringing His hands over the problems that we face, our spirit is in tune and in union with God and therefore undisturbed. This doesn’t mean that we always feel at peace, though. Spiritual growth is a result of walking in the spirit and not after the flesh, and it will result in the manifestation of peace. Our emotions can be a means of expressing what is true in the spirit, or they can be a means of expressing what we see outwardly with our natural eyes. Whether we experience “peace that surpasses understanding” will depend on which eyes we are using and what they are looking at: the “seen” or the “not seen.”

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we DO NOT LOOK AT the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18)

Even if the world is falling apart all around us, we can be filled with joy inexpressible. The key is keeping our eyes on Him.

“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3)1

Eternal life has already begun for those of us who are in Christ, so we can just believe: God’s GOT IT because He already had it! He was and is and is to come. Living in His reality is where we need to rest. The best thing we can do is live in this moment where heaven and earth meet. Eternity isn’t time, and it isn’t space, and we can only access it in the present. We can’t dwell in the past or worry about the future and still have our mind set on the spirit at the same time.
