There is only ONE thing we are to fear: fear that we aren’t at rest. It seems like the very thing we’re supposed to fear is the thing we’re hanging on to. For many of us, fear is a crutch that we have leaned on. For some of us fear has even become our “friend” because we wouldn’t know how to live without it. There is fear of not having enough and fear of the future. Our emotions cry, “If I don’t do it, who will?! If I don’t think about my problems, who will?!” There’s fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of sickness, fear of man, fear of death, and the list goes on.
Fear and rest cannot co-exist.
Think about Jesus as our Overcomer of fear. He’s our heavy-weight champion. He went into the ring heavy-ladened with all of our sin, all of the hand-writing against us, all of the curse of the law, and all of our punishment. He stepped up to the adversary, and it looked like all odds were against Him. Before the first punch was thrown, the enemy watched Jesus die right before his eyes. He thought he had won before the bell even rang. Yet in a shocking turn of events, the bell sounded and as Jesus was rising from the dead, He used all the weight of His glory and threw the first (and only!) knockout punch. Satan was slammed flat on his back never to recover, and all the hosts of heaven rejoiced!
Imagine that this Victor is our Husband, and we are the Bride who gets to take home the prize check: all of the riches of His grace. He was the Conqueror, but we are MORE than conquerors because of His love!
“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)
