The mixture of law and grace is so appealing because it is easy to preach and easy to understand: “You are saved by faith, and the ‘good news’ is that you now have your part to play so you can stay right with God! You will be so fulfilled as you keep your end of the bargain. And you’ll find your purpose in life!” Sounds like a great deal! But it’s man-centered, and it will wear you out.
My eighteen-year-old daughter once told me that the grace life is the hardest in one sense: we can’t DO anything to be right with God. She said, “Mom, people want to DO something. They want to feel like they have accomplished something and that they have something to add. It’s the hardest thing in the world to do nothing.” What insight. Wish I had been that smart at her age.
“For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His”. (Hebrews 4:9, NASB)1
“Let us therefore be zealous and exert ourselves and strive diligently to enter that rest…” (Hebrews 4:10, Amplified Bible)2
