“What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made;…”” (Galatians 3:19)1
The law entered that sin might increase.2(Romans 5:20) The law entered that sin might be exceedingly sinful.3(Romans 7:13) The law was given to show the sinner that he needed a Savior and was only given until the Seed, Jesus, would come. It was designed to govern the children of Israel under the Old Covenant until Jesus came, and enacted the New Covenant. The people before the cross looked FORWARD to Christ’s sacrifice for them. All of us living since the cross look BACK at the accomplishment of our salvation. The law has no place in God’s dealings with His people under grace. When the Seed came, His purpose was to close every door of access to God, but one: Jesus Christ.
