Abraham father of our faith

Throughout my whole life as a Christian I have heard that Abraham is the father of our faith.1 However, for decades all I knew about Abraham was the Sunday School song “Father Abraham” (including the hand motions, of course) and the story of God telling Abraham to kill his son Isaac and sacrifice him on the altar. For all practical purposes, I had a mental file for Abraham, but it was empty.

Many Christians don’t understand the significance of being in the spiritual lineage of Abraham. Most are living like spiritual orphans because they don’t have a clue about who they are nor do they comprehend all that their inheritance includes because of this spiritual lineage. Shouldn’t we know something about our roots?

God told Abraham, “In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:3)2

Paul taught extensively on our spiritual lineage in Abraham, and the cornerstone of his teaching was this phrase:

Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. (Romans 4:3)

Abraham was blessed by God, and the way he received God’s blessing was by BELIEVING that he was righteous before God; therefore, we are blessed, and the way we receive the blessing of God is by believing that we are righteous before God. Simple.
