The first time Moses went up the mountain, God showed him the instructions for the Tabernacle where His presence would dwell with the Israelites while they were in the desert.1 After God gave Moses the Ten Commandments, he went down the mountain to discover the Israelites worshipping a golden calf. They were breaking the first commandment! Before he reached the bottom of the mountain, he broke the two tables of stone in righteous anger and had to go back up and get another set. The second time that Moses came down the mountain with the two tablets of stone, God told him to put them in the tabernacle in the ark under the Mercy Seat where blood would be sprinkled every year on the Day of Atonement.2 When God would see the blood on the Mercy Seat, He would see the innocence of the lamb, not the disobedience of His people. The Ten Commandments were put in the ark, UNDER the Mercy Seat. Which goes to show:
Mercy triumphs over judgment. (James 2:13)3
God’s grace and mercy triumph over the law because of our spotless Lamb who took away our sins. We see Jesus all through the tabernacle. The Mercy Seat is Jesus. The Ark is Jesus. The Lamb is Jesus.
