People often ask me to pray for peace for them. I used to go ahead and do what they asked even though it never felt quite right. Now I just won’t do it. I’m not going to pray that God send a believer peace. If a person is a Christian, he has all the peace he’ll ever need in his spirit already, and if I were to pray for peace to somehow plop on them from the outside, I would be saying that Jesus didn’t tell the truth when He said He was leaving us with peace.1 The Spirit of Peace lives on the inside. The well of the living waters that never runs dry flows from our innermost being.2

If we believe we have no peace, we’re going to look for peace from the outside, and we’re going to be swung around by the tail by our circumstances.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. (Proverbs 23:7)3

We’re also going to think that someone else can steal our peace. If that were possible, they would have to somehow steal the Holy Spirit right out of our spirit! Dear reader, no one has the ability to steal our peace, but we have the ability to allow unbelief to cloud our eyes of faith.

When I pray for people, I usually just pray that God will open the eyes of their understanding to what already IS and for them to tap into it. If you are a believer, your spirit is as Jesus is: restful. Because of what Christ has done for us in removing our sins and making us one with Him, we can know that God is for us. If God is for us, who can be against us?

Several years ago I heard these words from the Holy Spirit, and I heeded them: “Tricia, you don’t need to fight. You don’t need to strive. You don’t need to set people right. You don’t need to defend your image. You don’t need to set the record straight. Your peace is more important. Let go and let Me handle it.”
