At one time we darkened in our understanding, alienated from the life of God.

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die, yet perhaps for a good man, someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. (Romans 5:6-9)1

The scandal of the Gospel is that Jesus died for the ungodly! All of the wrath of God against all sin was poured out on the spotless Lamb of God (He became sin, that we might become righteous), and because of that, our Father will never, ever be angry with us! Here’s how The Message paraphrase describes this truth:

Now that we are set right with God by means of this sacrificial death, the consummate blood sacrifice, there is no longer a question of being at odds with God in any way. (Romans 5:9, The Message)2

Today Jesus Christ is seated at the Father’s right hand, having cleansed us of our sins completely.

When He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. (Hebrews 1:3)

Not a single sin that we have committed or will commit was left unpunished. Do you know what this means? Not one single, solitary sin remains in us! This means that God is not counting our sins against us!
