This illustration describes the following:
- Spiritual federal headship and being born in Adam’s sin,
- The Divine Exchange of the cross
- Who we now are in Christ as believers in Jesus
Adam was created in righteousness, but he ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God had told Adam not to eat the fruit from this tree because in the day he ate of it he would surely die. Adam chose to believe the lie of Satan who told him that he would not die, but instead if he ate of the fruit, he would be like God, knowing good from evil. We know from the scriptures that Adam was already created in the image of God! However, he bought into the great deception that we can be like God apart from Him by knowing good from evil. Adam took the bait, and sin entered into man. Adam died spiritually, and physical death was also set in motion.
“Just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men.” (Romans 5:12)
“All men” includes you and me. We were born in Adam’s sin with his nature.
This is why Jesus had to come. We needed a sinless substitute who could remove the sin of Adam from us. Jesus paid the wages of sin of the entire world – every person from Adam to the last person who’ll ever live! The wages of sin is death, and Jesus died for us.
“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)
Jesus absorbed our sin. Became our sin. Abolished our sin. Why? So that we could be righteous with His righteousness. It was the Divine Exchange!
“And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.” (1 John 3:5)
Jesus went into the grave with our sin, and rose again without it. When He died, He took us with Him, and the old person that we once were with Adam’s sin nature died to sin forever. And we rose again with Christ and today we are in Him as a new creation!
“By one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.” (Romans 5:19)
By Christ’s obedience to die on the cross for us, we have been made righteous. Do you know what that means?! Believer, there is no sin in you! And you know what else? If you had been the only one, He’d have done it for you! He loves you that much!
“As He is so are we in this world. (1 John 4:17)
This is your identity in Christ. This is your nature as a new creation!
So today:
“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh.” (Romans 8:1-3)
The law was weak because it depended on the flesh to achieve righteousness before God. The law which presumed on our bankrupt flesh could never justify us. We could only be justified (made righteous) through the blood of Jesus. His blood has washed away our sins!!
So today, sin in the flesh has been condemned. It’s been overcome, and deprived it of its power to condemn us, control us, identity us, or separate us from God!
Romans 8:35-39 tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God! Nothing! Not even sin. The blood of Jesus is eternal and keeps us forever in Him! This is your permanent reality and the more you believe it, the more you’ll live it.
“For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” (Romans 6:14)
God had a will and His will came to pass:
“He said, ‘Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.’ He takes away the first that He may establish the second. By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” (Hebrews 10:9-10)
The will of God was to remove the first covenant of law and establish the new covenant of grace. And He did this through His Son – our one sacrifice for sins forever! Today we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all!
Sanctified is the Greek word “hagiazō” which means separation to God, made holy, consecrated to God, separated from the flesh unto the Spirit. We are separated from the flesh and this outside world unto God forever.
This is our spiritual reality and nothing can ever change it!
